Introduction

A course should be created for all trainings that will be offered more than once and/or will involve more than three people. A course code is a required field for course records in the Pathlore LMS. This page provides guidelines on how to create an informative course code.

Local Use

This single digit can be used as needed by the unit responsible for the training to provide additional categorization. If there is no specific motivation for its use, the local use number should be zero.

Level

This single digit signifies the relative ranking of the course within each sub-category based on difficulty and prerequisites. A course should have a level number higher than any prerequisites.

Level Codes

  • 0 - Introductory
  • 1 - Basic
  • 2 - Intermediate
  • 3 - Advanced
  • 4 - Updates

Specific Number

The last two digits identify the specific course within the level. This allows each unique combination of the preceding eight alpha-numeric characters to have up to 99 courses.

Additional Considerations

Courses are revised from time to time to keep their content up-to-date and to respond to changing training needs. If the course still fulfills the same training needs, the course number should remain the same to facilitate training and reporting requirements. However, if the course is designed to address different training needs, a new course code should be generated. If in doubt, please consult with Strategic Development for guidance.
