Caretaker TANF can be requested when there are child(ren) living in the home that a consumer is not legally responsible for. Assistance can be requested for just the child(ren) or the caretaker can request to be included in the determination as well.
When processing a TANF request for the child(ren) only the Caretaker should not be included in the TANF program block. Data collection pages only need to be completed for the child(ren).
If the caretaker is added to the program block in error, see Troubleshooting TANF.
If processing TANF for the child of a foster child, the foster parent is able to apply on behalf of the foster child’s child even through the foster child is not eligible. To approve TANF in this scenario, give the foster parent a relationship of Guardian/Conservator/Legal Custodian on the Relationship Detail page. See Relationship – Non-Medical for information on adding a relationship.
If the caretaker is requesting TANF benefits for themselves as well as the child(ren), all in the Mandatory Filing Unit (MFU) must be included in the program block. Data collection pages must be completed for all in the MFU. The Care and Control check box must be selected on the Relationship page for the child(ren) the caretaker is not legally responsible for.
If the caretaker decides during processing that they only want assistance for the children, see Troubleshooting TANF.
NOTE: If relationship verification is requested but not provided a Non-Compliance record of Failure to Provide Relationship verification to the adult is entered for the child not the caretaker. See Non-Compliance for information on adding a record.
